Caviar20 is thrilled to present the work of Louise Nevelson. This is the first time we have had one of her impressive molded paper pulp reliefs in black. It is a haunting example of her work.
Although Nevelson is best known as a sculptor, Nevelson expanded her practice by exploring different branches of printmaking, like many of her contemporaries. As a printmaker Nevelson was particularly curious, consistently experimenting with different techniques and materials.
"Nightscape" is a paradigm of Nevelson's visual language and printmaking practice. She utilized the technique of cast paper, whereby paper fibre or pulp is formed into a mold, creating a relief. The striking shapes and features of the work have Nevelson's signature arrangements, forms and texture.
"Nightscape" alludes to African art, hieroglyphs, cubism and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture. Completed in her signature monochromatic black, the raised height and/or depth of the shapes accentuates their mysterious and meticulous composition from the dark background.
